The European Public Prosecutor's Office, or What is the Law and Justice Prosecutor's Office Afraid of?

Synteza:

  • The European Public Prosecutor's Office, the first ever supranational prosecutor's office, complements the mechanism for combating crimes committed against EU finances and is currently run by 22 Member States.

  • On 1 June 2021, the European Public Prosecutor's Office will officially begin its work as an entity, independent of the European Commission and other institutions, set up to fight crime against EU finances.

  • The Law and Justice government has consistently refused to join its ranks despite the possibility of Poland joining as a member state at any time.

  • The European Public Prosecutor's Office has broader powers than the existing anti-fraud authorities in relation to EU finances – it can, among other things, take over and conduct investigations.

  • The principle of loyal cooperation implies mutual support between the European Public Prosecutor's Office and the competent national authorities, as well as the exchange of information to effectively combat crimes within its jurisdiction.

  • The European Public Prosecutor's Office acts in the interests of the European Union as a community and is not bound by, nor should it accept, instructions from any entity outside its structure.
